Multiple counter modifiers

Say you have a Hardened Scales and a Doubling Season. you play a card to put x +1/+1 counters on a creature you control. Do you put 2(x + 1) counters, or 2x +1 counters on the creature?
For a little more detail, it's the controller of the creature that chooses the order replacement effects are applied. If you control Hardened Scales and your opponent controls Primal Vigor you're still the one to choose the order

Either one is correct, depending on how you stack the replacement effects. You will want to stack it so Hardened Scales applies first, then Doubling Season applies--this will give you the 2(x+1) you desire.
