Meekstone and Awakened lands

Asked by MadScientist 7 years ago

So if I have Meekstone in play and an awakened land with multiple counters on it from say Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper does the land still untap because it is a land. Or does meekstone stop the land from untapping because it is a creature?

Meekstone only mentions creatures, so as long as a card is a creature with power 3 or more, Meekstone will prevent it from untapping - whether that card also has other times isn't relevant.

But during your untap step you untap all permanents, the meekstone would stop creatures greater than 3 from un-tapping but the card is a land which should untap due to normal untap rules.

Just trying to clarify a ruling on this case.

Meekstone only cares about two things:

  1. Is the permanent a creature?
  2. If so, is its power 3 or greater?

If the answer to both of these is "yes", then it doesn't untap during its controller's untap step. It doesn't care about any other card types the permanent may have, it could be an Artifact Creature Enchantment Land and it still wouldn't untap if its power is 3 or greater.

Imagine your local pool has a hard rule that no person under the age of 13 can enter the sauna. Now let's say you are 12 but happen to be 7 feet tall and weigh 280 pounds. The rule was probably put in place to prevent people with small bodies from overheating, but the wording only mentions age and not weight. So while it might seem like the rule doesn't apply to you in, the way it is explicitly stated means that it is a rule you'd have to follow. Rules and laws take precedence over personal opinions. In the same way, card effects take precedence over base game mechanics.

Rulings on this make sense, because it is a creature that is still a land it will not untap.

Thanks for the clarification.
