Llanowar Empath and Doubling Season Interaction

Asked by Trevdawg1998 8 years ago

I was looking at the grafting ability on Llanowar Empath, If I have Doubling Season will that mean I put a +1/+1 on a creature when it enters the battlefield 2 times, or do I put 2 +1/+1 counters onto a creature at the same time?

I assume Llanowar Empath is not actually the card you intended.

Oh, Whoops, I meant Llanowar Reborn

I believe that the land enters with two counters and then when you move one, you get an extra one. so four counters in all.

Perhaps you mean Llanowar Reborn?

Doubling Season specifically states "if an effect would place one or more counters" which the Graft effect essentially does IMO; to "move" something from one spot to another (even though most normal counter cards say "put") is to "place".

IMO Season would kick in.

So then the 2nd part of my question, Would I be able to graft a second creature when it enters the battlefield, since I will have 2 +1/+1 counters on it?

yes. You cast llanawar reborn with Doubling Season on the battlefield. it has 2 counters. you play a creature, it gets a counter then season triggers and it gets two, but there is still one on the land for the next creature you play, which will turn into two counters because of doubling season.

Yes. The Graft ability only tries to move one +1/+1 counter at a time, so after the first use there would still be another counter ready to go for another trigger.

The Rules Q&A section of the site is the best place to go for all your questions about game rules, tournament rules, and card interactions.

InfiniteParadoX, you're 90% there.

Note that you don't cast lands, you simply play them for the turn. And Doubling Season's abilities are actually replacement effects that modify the event of counters going on a permanent.

When Llanowar Reborn enters the battlefield, it enters with 2 counters on it. It's Graft ability says that "...you may move [one] +1/+1 counter from this land onto [the creature]."

Your land will have 1 counter left on it if you graft the first creature. Note that Doubling Season will make 2 counters go on that creature instead of the 1.

Raging_Squiggle Yeah... so it comes in with two, and gives each creature two counters instead of one. Is that not what I said?

@InfiniteParadoX: Yes, that's what you said. Raging_Squiggle was just addressing a couple of technical game terms - "cast", "trigger" - that were being used in a case where they don't apply. There are some situations (admittedly, not many) where the terms used in your explanation would produce a significantly different result from how the cards actually work.

In addition, saying otherwise may confuse some players into thinking either the ability or land can be countered.
