Liliana, Defiant Necromancer  Flip and manifested non-creature permanents

Asked by ekim32 8 years ago

I control an emblem created by Liliana, Defiant Necromancer and a manifested Vampiric Rites.

When the manifest dies, does the enchantment return to the battlefield at the beginning of the next end step?

I know it only cares that it was a creature on the battlefield when it died, but does the delayed trigger look for the same card or for the now non-existent manifest?

It will return regardless of it's type while it's in the graveyard. The delayed trigger only cares that it is the same object as the one that entered the graveyard.

Got it: as a manifested card is the same ENTITY as the hidden card, it is checked for creature type (check!) in the first place (when it dies), and then when it hits the graveyard, it is a valid permanent so the card can return to the battlefield (instants and sorceries can't do that).

From the site:
"If the face-down creature has any counters on it, those remain on the face-up creature. It's not a new creature, and it doesn't enter the battlefield just by turning face up..."
"If you manifest a noncreature card, it can't be turned face up this way (revealing what its mana cost is and paying that cost)..."

From the rulings:
707.9. If a face-down permanent moves from the battlefield to any other zone, its owner must reveal it to all players as he or she moves it. If a face-down spell moves from the stack to any zone other than the battlefield, its owner must reveal it to all players as he or she moves it. If a player leaves the game, all face-Down permanents and spells owned by that player must be revealed to all players. At the end of each game, all face-down permanents and spells must be revealed to all players.

Using that emblem might be a way to cheat some permanents into the battlefield*

Keep in mind, Vampiric Rites will return as a face-up enchantment card without the creature type, and will not have any power or toughness of 2/2.

This is the same principle as Grave Betrayal where it only cares that a card that was sent to the graveyard is a creature at the time of dying.

Also note: Whenever any double-sided, manifested/morphed card goes to the graveyard, it will always have the "sun" side up, meaning that the side with the cmc and the unofficial "sun" symbol on the top left of the card. (See Liliana, Heretical Healer  Flip).
