Kitchen Finks + Dromoka's Command

Asked by Ryotenchi 9 years ago

So lets say Kitchen Finks has already persisted once and has a -1/-1 counter on it, and I proceed to cast Dromoka's Command targeting it choosing +1/+1 counter and Fight. Since they both, I would assume, resolve at the same time the command does..

The Finks' counters would cancel eachother out while the fight is still happening. Will Kitchen Finks die permanently or persist again since it would likely enter the yard without a -1/-1 counter?

(Someone pointed this out to me, but I feel sketchy about it since I cant find a single ruling on it yet.)

Apologies for the wording.. cant seem to order my thoughts right now..

The counters will balance out, so Kitchen Finks will Persist again.

kk, Denial048. I just wanted to make sure its not a timing issue.. since It appears that the fight occurs the same exact time, rather than I choose the resolution order or something to that effect...

Def seeking more a more definitive explanation... will just have to wait for it to come up in rulings I guess.

Card effects resolve in the order they are written in. That is true even for cards with modes.

So, when you choose +1/+1 counter and Fight as the modes, Finks will get a counter first, cancelling its -1/-1 counter. It will only then fight and if it dies, it will be without any counters on it, so persist will work again and return the creature appropriately.

The provided answers are incorrect.

Although the commands are indeed executed in the order written, counters are canceled as a state-based action. The counters would be removed at the same time Kitchen Finks would be destroyed, so Kitchen Finks's last-known information shows that it had one of each kind of counter on it.

This "wrinkle" occurs when a counter canceling and destruction would occur simultaneously; if the creature would survive instead of being destroyed, then the counters would cancel properly and you'd be able to persist once the creature finally dies.
