Howl of the Horde and Shrapnel Blast

Asked by ALX 9 years ago

Say I have a Haunted Plate Mail I'm play and no other creatures or artifacts, I pay 0 to make Mail a 4/4 creature then cast Howl of the Horde and then cast Shrapnel Blast sacrificing Mail. Will I get 2 copies of the spell or would I need two other Artifacts (one for each copy of Shrapnel Blast)?

You do not need to sacrifice an additional artifact. The sacrifice is in addition to casting the spell, and copies of spells are not cast, simply created on the stack.

That's what I thought, whereas if it read "sacrifice an artifact, Shrapnel Blast deals 5 damage " you would have to do it for the copies as well since it would be part of the spell's effect but this "as an additional cost" so it's part part of the cost. 15 damage? Yes please! :)

In the situation described above, you'd only get one copy, not two.

Howl of the Horde's keyword is 'raid'. In order to get two copies, you'd need to attack first - simply having a big creature isn't enough to activate its second ability (that's the Temur keyword, 'ferocious' that you're probably thinking about.)

In order to get two copies of Shrapnel Blast (for which you'd still only need to sac the one artifact) you'd have to first attack with the Haunted Plate Mail, have it survive combat, and then cast Howl of the Horde in your second main phase (followed by the Shrapnel Blast).

Thanks Named_Tawyny I was thinking of Ferocious. Hopefully still very possible, the deck I'm building also features Fated Conflagration so there's another way to get the 15 damage and not even need the Artifact (1 more mana though)

Oh, and Conflagration doesn't target players... waaaay too much just reading what I want to see :P

Yeah, unfortunately.

But provided they don't have a bigger creature, you can swing with the Mail, and then pull it off. Or just suffice with 10 damage. ;)

Yeah, it's still pretty good. This is the prototype of the deck Kurkesh's Hammer if you're interested...
