How does extort work with the stack?

Asked by capriom85 9 years ago

If I have Pontiff of Blight on the field and I cast Sanguine Bond and it aticks, then cast Exquisite Blood with the extort paid, and it, too, sticks, does the extort trigger the infinite life gain _ life loss combo? Or is Exquisite Blood technically not on the field yet when the extort is paid?

702.100a - Extort is a triggered ability. "Extort" means "Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay or . If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain life equal to the total life lost this way."

Since extort is a triggered ability, it uses the stack as spells and abilities usually do, and can be responded to. Extort is whenever you cast a spell, meaning while the spell is still on the stack, and so it would resolve before your spell would.

Since the Exquisite Blood is on the stack, not on the field, the combo cannot work. Once it resolves, you can simply extort another spell for your combo to work.
