Evolve and +1/+1 counters

Asked by MadScientist 10 years ago

I am working out some effects on my deck Pandoras box of combos and I have a question about counters.

If I have a 1/1 Fathom Mage with 4 counters on it and I put a 2/2 Kiora's Follower into play will the evolve still trigger.

I would think yes seeing as the mage's p/t is still 1/1 it just has counters on it.

I would like an official answer as if that is the case then this deck just got even more awesome to me.

No, it would not trigger. Since Evolve puts +1/+1 counters on it, having them on it from another source would work the same if it had already evolved. When calculating a creature's P/P for evolve, you take into account any P/T buffs from +1/+1 counters as well as static buffs like that of Bad Moon .

It's power/toughness is not 1/1, it's 5/5. It has a base power/toughness of 1/1 and then adding the 4 counters. When a creature enters the battlefield, the evolve trigger will check what the creature's current p/t is, not what it's base is. Supposing you had Fathom mage, w/ no counters on it. For whatever reason, you play Giant Growth on it and then a creature at some point after it resolves. It's going to take the Giant Growth into account when it figures out whether to evolve or not.

The more I read my question the more I realized that I already knew the answer duh. Thanks for he input anyway guys I just had a brain fart there.

But a quick Bioshift before casting the next creature would drop the counters creature back to 0 counters and then you could evolve it again. :)
