End Step Question with Meren of Clan Nel Toth

Asked by Merlin_Darkrimson_Voidmystic 5 years ago

So, say I have Meren of Clan Nel Toth on the field, with an Arcbound Worker in the 'yard. I also have Night of Soul's Betrayal and Dictate of Erebos on the field. At the beginning of the end step, Meren's reanimate ability will trigger, targeting the Worker. This(assuming you have at least one counter for Meren) returns the Worker to the field. However, immediately afterwards, since it has -1/-1 from Night of Soul's Betrayal, it would die, causing both the Modular and Dictate of Erebos triggers to happen.

Would this just leave Meren(or whatever else I targeted with the Modular trigger) a bit bigger and my opponents one creature less, or might this alter the turn order a little bit?

What I'm thinking is that, since they all ended up triggering in the beginning of the end step, it would go back to the beginning of the end step, retriggering Meren and allowing me to wrath the field as well as end with an insanely big Meren. Or would it, by default, end in the end step, because the beginning of the end step already happened(not in the beginning, therefore not retriggering Meren's "at the beginning of the end step")?

Please clear this up, if you can. Thanks!

Clarification: if the above was hard to read, here is a slightly simpler explanation:

Beginning of the End Step: Meren triggers, targeting Arcbound Worker After Meren's ability resolves, Worker would immediately die because of Soul's Betrayal, triggering Dictate and Modular. After those all resolved, would it end in the beginning of the end step or right after it?

Meren of Clan Nel Toth

Arcbound Worker

Night of Souls' Betrayal

Dictate of Erebos

Please tag the cards in question.

Meren's ability triggers when you move from Main Phase 2 to End Step. Arcbound Worker will return to the field on resolution of her ability, and then will die as a state-based action as you receive priority. After the Dictate of Erebos and Modular triggers resolve, you get priority, allowing you to activate abilities/cast instants before moving from End Phase to Cleanup step and passing turn. There is no reason for Meren's ability to trigger again, since the trigger window has passed from the first time it triggered.

So this is the wrong forum I believe as questions should go in the Rules Q&A section.

As to your question however, I think you are getting end step and clean up step mixed up, as if anything happens during clean up we get another clean up and another and so on until everything is resolved.

All players pass priority in the second main phase
Things that trigger on end step trigger
Meren as the only trigger resolves bringing Arcbound Worker back to the battlefield
Soul's Betrayal puts Worker's toughness below 1
State Based Actions make Worker Die
Modular triggers on Die targeting Meren
Dictate triggers on Die
You control both triggers and decide which order they are put on the stack
IF Dictate on the stack then Modular on the stack Modular resolves putting a counter on Meren
Each opponent sacrifices a creature
Clean up step begins
Turn ends
IF Modular on the stack then Dictate
Each opponent sacrifices a creature
Modular resolves putting a counter on Meren
Clean up step begins
Turn ends

Hope that helps

Couple things that were missed:

When Arcbound Worker dies, it will trigger Meren of Clan Nel Toth's ability to get another experience, as a creature you control died.

Also, Modular can only target artifact creatures. Unless something is making Meren an artifact, you cannot target her with modular.
