electromancer killed during instant cast

Asked by thewyzman 9 years ago

Goblin Electromancer on my board, so in working with his reduction ability, I tap (1) to Magma Jet my opponent. In response, they Shock my Goblin, killing it.

Does the casting cost of my Magma Jet increase to (2) such that I have to tap another (1) for the Jet to work, or is Goblin's reduction effect still effective as the Jet resolves?

Once the spell is cast, only then can the opponent shock your Goblin. By the time the goblin dies, the spell cost has already been paid and the Magma Jet will resolve as normal, no cost increase will ever happen in the scenario you described.

First, no player has priority during the casting process. Once you announce Magma Jet and put it on the stack, you complete the casting process, including payment of costs, before any players can take any other actions. When a player responds to a spell or ability, what he or she is doing is taking an action (either casting a spell or activating an ability) during the round of priority that follows the casting of a spell, activation of an ability, or handling of a triggered ability. You respond to the complete object on the stack, not to the partially-handled object as it is being prepared.

Therefore, your opponent cannot cast Shock (much less resolve it) in the middle of you casting Magma Jet .

Furthermore, removing Goblin Electromancer will not retroactively increase the cost of previously-cast spells, so you won't have to go back and pay an additional for your Magma Jet if your opponent Shock s Goblin Electromancer in response to it.
