double life gain

Asked by CMDRJosh77 4 years ago

so if you had a creature out with Celestial Mantle on it and did combat damage to a player which triggers the the double your life total and you had a Alhammarret's Archive out on the battle field what would happen and what would be triggered first? would you gain double your life total then doubled again?

No since with Alhammarret's Archive you double the life you gain from when you gain it would make it happen second. And Celestial mantle doubles your life total so it would work like this.

Creature deals damage with celestial mantle on it while you are at 20 life. You would gain 20 from the mantle, but with archive out it doubles what you gain so you really get 40 life instead.

Pretty much it isn’t a double then double again, it just double what you would always add on.

Couple boring admin stuff:

First, if you have questions about how rules, cards, or card interactions work, please use the Rules Q&A section--that section has some added functionalities, such as the ability to "Mark as Answer" a post to indicate your question has been resolved. I have gone ahead and moved the thread for you.

Also, please remember to link all cards in your question using double brackets, like so:

[[Celestial Mantle]], [[Alhammarret's Archive]]

Celestial Mantle , Alhammarret's Archive

Joe_Ken_ is correct, but I wanted to clear up a bit why this is the correct answer.

Celestial Mantle has a triggered ability. Triggered abilities involve a certain events happening (indicated by "when", "whenever", or "at), and that event bringing about a certain action. Here, the event is the enchanted creature dealing combat damage to a player, and the action is doubling the controller's life.

Alhammarret's Archive is a replacement effect--this means if you are going to do something, "instead" you do something else.

So, Celestial Mantle would normally double your life, causing you to gain life = your life total. So, if you have 20 life, you would gain 20 life. Alhammarret's Archive has a replacement effect, modifying how you gain life--the replacement effect would cause you to gain 40 life instead. As such, you would end with 60 life.

To make it simpler to remember, you’re basically tripling your life total with this combination of cards.

Start at 20, you would gain 20 with is replaced to 40, for a total of 60, 3x your starting total.

Start at 50, gain 50 replaced to 100, for a total of 150, 3x your starting total.

In the future, please remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button once your question has been resolved. Not only does this signal to other users that you have no follow-up questions, but it also helps keep the unanswered questions list clear of resolved questions and helps future users quickly identify the correct answer.

Since this question has been answered for a couple days, I have marked an answer on your behalf. I generally try to avoid marking my own answer, but, in this case, I feel it best walks through why the effects apply in different ways.
