Does Marchesa, the Black Rose bring back vehicles that have a +1/+1 counter?

Asked by carpecanum 7 years ago

If Marchesa, the Black Rose is in play and Sky Skiff is killed while crewed/in creature form with a +1/+1 counter, will Marchesa's ability bring the vehicle back during the next end step? Does the vehicle revert to a non-creature artifact when it hits the graveyard and negate Marchesa's ability?

Marchesa's ability brings back anything that was a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it immediately before it was sent to the graveyard. Much like the +1/+1 counter no longer being on the card in the graveyard does not negate her ability, the card no longer having the type "creature" in the graveyard does not negate her ability.

Its not immediate Gidgetimer, the lag between "death" and returning can be as long as an entire turn if something dies after the beginning of an end step. Token creatures do not get returned, they poof as soon as they change zones. I'm kinda sure vehicles come back but not completely sure.

As long as the Vehicle was a creature and had a +1/+1 counter when it died it will be returned. If the vehicle is destroyed while it's not a creature, it will not be returned, even if it has a +1/+1 counter on it.

carpecanum: Nowhere did I say it immediately returned. I said if it returns or not is dependent on what the card in question was immediately before it was sent to the graveyard, also called "last known information" of the permanent. I'm sorry if my phrasing confused you, but I was trying to answer the question without using rules jargon. If it makes it clearer I will restate my answer using the jargon.

Marchesa's ability brings back anything with the last known information of being a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it.

To expound; with the exception of Skullbriar, the Walking Grave no card ever has +1/+1 counters on it in the graveyard, but the last known information is that it had a +1/+1 counter on the permanent. Therefore; Marchesa will create a delayed trigger returning the card at the beginning of the next endstep. Similarly a card that is not a creature in the graveyard but had the last known information of being a creature will trigger Marchesa creating a delayed trigger to return the card at the beginning of the next endstep.

You wrote "Marchesa's ability brings back anything that was a creature with a +1/+1 counter on it immediately before it was sent to the graveyard." Thank you though.

immediately
adverb
1. at once; instantly.
2. without any intervening time or space.

Second meaning modifying "before", not first meaning modifying "brings back".
