Does extort trigger multiple times for each instance?

Asked by ShadowNinja0704 8 years ago

Picture this:

I have Cliffhaven Vampire, Pontiff of Blight, Giant Scorpion, and Basilica Screecher on the battlefield. My opponent has 8 life left. I attack with Basilica Screecher, but before blockers are declared, I cast Condemn on Basilica Screecher and extort 5 times. Does Cliffhaven Vampire's ability trigger 5 times, therefore causing my opponent to lose 10 life, or do the extorts count as one instance of gaining life? And can I even perform this combo for this effect?

With condemn on the stack, each extort ability goes on the stack separately. After each extort resolves Cliffhaven Vampire activates. So yes, your opponent loses 10 life, you gain 10 life, and then Condemn resolves and you gain 2 more life.

Wouldn't it be my opponent loses 10 life and I gain 5 life, and the two from Condemn?

Note that Cliffhaven Vampire's ability doesn't activate. Triggered abilities trigger and usually begin with "when/whenever/at", and activated abilities are activated and are written as "cost:effect".

Also note that Basilica Screecher has 2 instances of extort. (One from itself and one granted by Pontiff of Blight). So you can technically make the opponent lose 12 life and you gain 6.
