Do Renown abilities trigger with lethal damage?

Asked by GeminiSpartanX 8 years ago

Say I have an unrenowned Relic Seeker that has a Loxodon Warhammer attached to it giving it trample making him a 5/2. If a 3/3 creature blocks it (thereby dealing lethal damage to the seeker), would the renowned trigger still go on the stack after damage resolves? Or would the Seeker die before the trigger has a chance to be placed on the stack and be effectively useless?

I guess I'm just trying to dissect the 3rd ruling listed on the gatherer for this card and make sure I understand all of it's implications.

Yes, in this case, the first ability (renown) will trigger. But by the time it tries to resolve, the creature is dead and this becomes an impossible game action. The renown ability will "fizzle" and the second ability will never even trigger, since its trigger condition has not been met.

Gatherer ruling for context:

6/22/2015 If a renown ability triggers, but the creature leaves the battlefield before that ability resolves, the creature doesnt become renowned. Any ability that triggers whenever a creature becomes renowned wont trigger.

Thanks. I guess I was just unsure when exactly the creature left the battlefield in that scenario.

Note that nothing fizzles. Fizzling refers to being countered by game rules for no longer having a legal target. The renown ability doesn't target anything, so it still resolves. It just doesn't do anything.
