Darksteel lose all ability

Asked by ThrillingThriller 7 years ago

If i play Darksteel Mutation on a creature but my opponent place artifact like Loxodon Warhammer on it after does the creature gain lifelink trample and +3/+0 ?

And what happen when the articfact is already on the creature before i use Darksteel Mutation on it?

Due to the layering system, power and toughness changing effects (e.g. +3/+0, -1/-2, etc.) are applied after power and toughness setting effects such as Darksteel Mutation. Any creature enchanted by Darksteel Mutation and equipped with Loxodon Warhammer will be a 3/1 creature with indestructible, lifelink, and trample, regardless of whether or not the creature was equipped before it was enchanted.

"loses all other abilities" just means that any abilities on the actual card don't apply. See Arcane Lighthouse, which not only makes creatures lose hexproof and shroud but also prevents them from regaining hexproof and shroud.

If Loxodon Warhammer is already equipped to the creature when you use Darksteel Mutation then it will be a 3/1 with no abilities.

Another part of how the layer system works is that effects from the same layer are applied in "timestamp" order. Effects that cause a creature to either gain or lose abilities are both from the same layer. If you play Darksteel Mutation first and then Loxodon Warhammer gets equipped, the creature first loses all abilities and then gains lifelink and trample. If the Warhammer is equipped first and then you play the Mutation, the creature first gains lifelink and trample and then loses all abilities.

Rhadamanthus now I'm confused Pieguy396 said that it doesn't matter if it was done before or after that it only negate the ability on the card therefore the ability given by the artifact will not be negated

And now you're saying the situation change depending of the order of which one was equipped first

Can you clear that up ?

Actually, Rhadamanthus is right, I forgot about timestamps. Whichever one was played last will override the other with respect to abilities, but not power and toughness. Though, if the Warhammer was equipped first, you can always equip it to something else and re-equip it to have it gain lifelink and trample again.
