Dark Depths Questions

Asked by Profet93 6 years ago

I'm still a little confused even after searching online. My understanding is that Dark Depths combo works with Thespian's Stage and not Vesuva because Vesuva enters with 10 ice counters while Thespian's Stage does not. So if I copy Dark Depths with Thespian's Stage, then the "new" dark depths and the "old" dark depths both die to the legendary rule? Can someone explain in detail the exact process of how you get the token, which lands die and why?

The legend rule was changed some time ago.

704.5k. If a player controls two or morelegendarypermanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the legend rule. Only one copy of a givenlegendarycard may be in control by a same player at the same time.

So when you make the copy you have to choose one to keep. The other gets sacrificed. Assuming you keep the copy with no counters it will then turn into the big monster.

So to make sure I understood you correctly, there would be 2 Dark Depths, the original (with counters) and the copy (without). The legendary rule would go into effect and I would have to choose which dark depths I would like to keep. Since I want the 20/20 creature, I would choose to sacrifice the original dark depths that has the counters on it. Then since only the copy remains with no ice counters, I would then sacrifice the copy to get my 20/20, resulting in the "destruction/sacrifice" of both my lands, correct?

Small correction: The original is neither sacrificed nor destroyed, it's simply put into the graveyard as a state based action, only the copy is sacrificed. The end result is still losing both lands and getting a 20/20.

Thank you Shane and Neotrup for your help. I am going to be using this combo once my dark depths comes in the mail. I appreciate you both going into this level of detail, as when I describe it to my playgroup, they will understand it better as well :)
