Changing control of a creature with Assault Suit.

Asked by RicketyEng 8 years ago

I recently came upon an interesting interaction:

  • I have a creature equipped with Assault Suit.
  • An opponent takes control of that creature using some other method such as Willbreaker.

Since I retain control of Assault Suit though, I could have other opponents gain control of the creature. Since the Assault Suit's control effect is until end of turn, does it return to my control or to the control of Willbreaker's controller? My guess is that it depends on whether the continuous effects replace each other or are superimposed over each other. A look into the rules leads me to believe time stamps may have something to say about this, but I wasn't able to determine if the Willbreaker's control effect ends when a new control effect is applied.

Timestamps are the key here. A newer control-changing effect will go on top of and override an older one, but that doesn't make the older one stop applying. The older one will only end either when it says it does (for example, when your opponent no longer controls Willbreaker ), or when the controlled object changes zones (and so becomes a new game object). When Assault Suit 's control-changing effect wears off at end of turn the creature will go back to whoever the most recent active control-changing effect says it should.

It remembers who last controlled it, and returns to that player. Opponent #2 will gain control of the creature via Assault Suit's triggered ability, and at the end of turn, Opponent #1 will regain control of it.

If by some reason, Willbreaker left the battlefield while Opponent #2 had control of the equipped creature, at end of turn you would gain control of your creature because Willbreaker's ability has ended.
