Can You Generate Infinite Mana With a Thran Dynamo and Two Voltaic Keys?

Asked by DemonDragonJ 5 years ago

I a player controls a Thran Dynamo and two copies of Voltaic Key , will they be able to generate infinite mana? My presumption is that they first tap the dynamo, the use 1 mana to use the first key to untap the dynamo, use the second mana to use the second key to untap the first key, tap the dynamo again, and then repeat, gaining an additional 1 mana each time; is that correct?

This will not work.

You tap the Dynamo, and now have , a tapped Dynamo, and two untapped Keys.

You tap the first Key to untap the Dynamo. You now have , an untapped Dynamo, one tapped Key, and one untapped Key.

In your example, You tap the second key to untap the first key. You now have , an untapped Dynamo, one tapped Key, and one untapped Key.

You tap the Dynamo for mana. You how have , a tapped Dynamo, a tapped Key, and an Untapped key.

Now your chain fizzles out, as you only have one Key to play with. You only have two options to untap--the currently-tapped Key or the Dynamo. Untapping the tapped Key does not change the battlefield any; you are merely substituting one tapped Key for another.

Untapping the Dynamo and using it again leaves you with a total of 7 colorless mana and all your artifacts tapped out.

Slight typo in the above--it should say untapping the Dynamo at the end leaves you with six mana, not seven.

It would be possible to get seven, if you just used both your Keys on the Dynamo, rather than on one another (that's the maximum amount of mana you can get out of this situation), but that is not what you asked for.

cdkime, that is very disappointing to learn, but I am glad that I asked this question before actually attempting to execute that combo.

Would it be possible to achieve infinite mana with three Voltaic Key s, or would the end result still be the same?

Same problem. Voltaic Key does not result in a net gain of untapped permanents--it merely exchanges one tapped permanent for another.

Every time you tap down the Dynamo, you are adding another tapped permanent to the equation. The more Keys you have, the more times you can stave off the inevitable, but eventually you are still going to run out of untapped Keys.

cdkime, in that case, it seems that I will need to find another way to generate infinite mana.
