Can you cast an uncounterable Qasali Amusher with the second ability?

Asked by Dorotheus 8 years ago

Qasali Ambusher's second ability states may and being able to pay it's cost through Cavern of Souls to give make it uncounterable and flash. I've had a lot of people say "Sure" and some people be just flatly unsure because wording and rhetoric.

If you choose the alternate casting cost of "without paying its mana cost" there is no cost to pay with Cavern of Souls so you have no way to use that mana to cast the Qasali Ambusher, so it cannot be uncounterable.

The ability isn't giving you the chance to cast and then the option of paying the cost or not. It is giving you the chance to cast it without paying the cost. If you take it, no uncounterability.

I believe the question was specifically dealing with whether or not you could cast it by paying its mana cost with flash.

Looking at Qasali Ambusher's triggered ability I read the "without paying its mana cost" and "as though it had flash" as being linked, so it would be all or nothing. If they were two separate abilities, there would be another "and you may..." between the two.

I addressed that. The option is "If X, then you can cast with flash without mana cost" so you don't have the option to do that ability but still pay the mana cost.

Another point is that the spell is only uncounterable with Cavern of Souls ability if that mana is spent to cast that spell, but you can just add mana to a spell to apply the ability

@kylarbandurzo: I'm not sure if that's a typo or you're under a misapprehension. You can't spend mana on something unless you're paying an actual cost. If you're casting Qasali Ambusher for its alternate cost, then you're not paying any mana unless an additional cost or a cost increased requires some mana payment. You can't "spend the mana anyway," so to speak.

@kylar I'm not fully sure what you are saying, but if you are saying that you can arbitrarily spend mana on a spell, such as with cavern's uncounterable mana, that isn't true. If you don't have a cost that needs the mana, you can't spend it to gain the effect.

Pardon me if I totally misunderstood what you meant.
