can i trigger Living Lore if it gets blocked by deathtouch?

Asked by Sagi007 8 years ago

Living Lore triggers when it deals combatdamage. But im not sure what actually happens when it receives damage and would die from it.

2nd Question. If i cast the spell exiled from LL does that card remain in exile or does it go to me grave?

As long as the creature with deathtouch (or any creature with power at least as high as Living Lore's toughness) doesn't have First Strike or Double Strike (and damage doesn't get prevented, etc.), they will both deal damage at the same time. The ability will trigger, but before it resolves and you're able to sacrifice Living Lore, state-based actions will put it in your graveyard for having received lethal damage.

As for your second question: Unless otherwise stated, the spell will go into your graveyard afterwards, because you cast it as you normally would - except without paying it's mana cost. Exceptions are spells such as Temporal Mastery, which exile themselves as part of the resolution.

Note that even though the ability triggers, it's intervening "if clause" checks to see if you sacrificed it. Since it died before you got the chance, the ability will be removed from the stack and the instant/sorcery card will stay in exile.

@Raging_Squiggle: That's not an intervening "if" clause. It's just a conditional check on whether the optional cost of sacrificing Living Lore was paid. If it were an intervening "if" clause then the ability as-written would never get put onto the stack under any circumstances (the first check at the time the ability would trigger will fail).

Just see if i now understand it correctly.

  1. i attack and deal damage.
  2. my caracter is dead by default due to damage taken.
  3. trigger possible combat abilitys like LL.
  4. LL cant be sacced since its already dead.
  5. combat ends.

Yes, that's right.
