Butcher of Malakir vs Whispersilk Cloak

Asked by Ecmdrw5 6 years ago

I think I know the answer is yes the opponent has to sacrifice, but Im not 100%. I had Butcher of Malakir on the table and everything was great with my 1/1 vampires sacrificially blocking until my opponents last creature had Whispersilk Cloak. He didnt want to sack it, claiming it was an ability. I said its not targeting the creature, its basically targeting you. We discussed and I agreed to let it go and finished the game a few turns later. He should have sacked it right? Also exile all creatures would remove his creature correct?

Yes, butcher does not target. Anything that doesn't target that destroys, causes to be sacrificed or exiles would get around shroud.

Yes. Unless an effect specifically uses the word "Target" then it is not targeting anything. Shroud only prevents targeting. Butcher of Malakir doesn't even target the opponent. Its triggered ability doesn't target anything. And yes, an effect like Planar Cleansing, or Final Judgement would circumvent Shroud. Effects like Path to Exile are still prevented by shroud though.
