Anointer of Champions and Mentor mechanic

Asked by salgrem 5 years ago

With Anointer of Champions , can I buff a mentor creature, such as Sunhome Stalwart , so that it can mentor a same-sized creature, say, Bishop's Soldier ? Or is it too late?

Unfortunately this won't work. The last chance you have to buff a mentor creature is the beginning of combat step.

What happens is that you must attack with Sunhome Stalwart before you can target it with Anointer of Champions (because before that, Stalwart isn't an "attacking creature"). This triggers mentor, which goes on the stack before you have a chance to tap Anointer. The target for the mentor trigger must be chosen when it's put on the stack (still before you've been able to tap Anointer), and the game won't let you target Bishop's Soldier or similarly-sized creatures because they don't meet the requirement of "lesser power."

So by the time you can actually tap Anointer of Champions to make the Sunhome Stalwart bigger, you've already chosen a target for mentor, and it's not going to be a 2/2.

This will not work. Mentor targets, which means you have to target a creature with lesser power at the time the ability goes on the stack. The ability will trigger when the Sunhome Stalwart is declared as an attacker, so you have to choose a creature with lesser power before you gain priority and can activate Anointer of Champions ' ability.

The one exception is if you have multiple combat phases, such as with Aggravated Assault , as you could buff on the first combat phase and then have mentor in the second.
