Aetherflux Reservoir, Broken rules?

Asked by Cyber Locc 7 years ago

Could someone explain to me. Why this card gives 2 life for every spell when it says it gives 1?

I do not see how this gives 2 life. But Xmage says it does and so does the official rulings. Which doesn't make any since.

The ruling."The number of spells youve cast is counted only as Aetherflux Reservoirs triggered ability resolves. For example, if you cast a spell, then respond to the triggered ability with a second spell, youll gain 4 life total."

To me this is saying that it counts its trigger. The person I played says it adds after the first. so the second spell you cast you now get 2 life, plus the 1 life from the first.

Either way, this card does not state either of these things in any way. and this should not happen IMO.

Why I say this, A. It cant duplicate beyond the first life as the card doesn't state that. Also the ruling says 4 from 2, which would not be the duplication.

B. Triggered abilities are not spells. "402.5. Activated and triggered abilities aren't spells"

So why is this cards ruling and Xmage busted?

Link the card in question: Aetherflux Reservoir.

Provide links to the Gatherer page for rulings.

If you cast a spell, then the Reservoir will trigger. If you respond to that triggered ability with another spell, you get a second trigger. The stack will look as follows:

  1. Second Reservoir trigger
  2. Second spell
  3. First Reservoir trigger
  4. First spell

The second Reservoir trigger resolves first. It will check the number of spells cast that turn, which is two. It will gain you two life.

The second spell with then resolve.

The first Reservoir trigger resolves next. It will also see that two spells have been cast that turn, gaining you two life.

The first spell will resolve last.

tl;dr: The triggered ability checks the number of spells cast that turn upon resolution. Casting a spell adds to your "Storm" count upon, well, casting.

Link all cards in your question.
Aetherflux Reservoir

The answer is very simple.

Aetherflux Reservoir's ability counts the number of spells you've cast this turn, but it only makes this count when the ability resolves.

Let's say you cast spell A. Aetherflux Reservoir's ability triggers. Let's say also that you allow the ability to resolve. It'll see that you've cast one spell this turn, and you'll gain 1 life. You then cast spell B. Aetherflux Reservoir's ability will trigger again. This time, when it resolves, it'll see that you've cast two spells (A and B) this turn, so you'll gain 2 life.

Now, let's say instead that you cast spell A, and Aetherflux Reservoir's ability triggers, and in response to the ability you cast spell B. Aetherflux Reservoir's ability will trigger again. This time, when each instance of Aetherflux Reservoir's ability resolves, it'll see that you've cast two spells this turn (A and B). You'll gain 2 life for each instance of the ability, or 4 life total.

Basically, the ability is asking "How many spells have you cast this turn before this ability resolved?"

The ability itself is not counted as a spell because it is not a spell.

Okay but Epochalyptik. That doesn't work either for the situation that I just had.

The opponent had 3 aetherflux resovoirs. He casted 4 spells in the turn.

Now going by your example, each one should of gave him 4 life per trigger. 4 triggers from each flux, that equals 16 per flux. For a total of 48 life. He gained 24 life.

Futhermore, for them to be casted in response they would have to be instant casts. He cannot cast creatures in response. Which nothing he casted was instant.

Cyber Locc,
Just to add a little more ...

So if Aetherflux Reservoir is on the battlefield and you cast Sorcery, Artifact, Creature, or Planeswalker spells, the triggers resolve one by one, and your life gain is:

  • 1 spell: 1 life
  • 2 spells: 3 life
  • 3 spells: 6 life
  • 4 spells: 10 life ...

But if you can Storm off with Instants, the triggers stack and your life gain is even more bonkers ...

  • 1 spell: 1 life
  • 2 spells: 4 life
  • 3 spells: 9 life
  • 4 spells: 16 life ...

clayperce, your first setup is what happened to me. Expect 4 spells with 3 reservoirs equaled 24 life.

It depends on when the abilities and spells resolved in relation to one another.

If you cast a second spell in response to Aetherflux Reservoir's ability, you'll end up with two triggers on the stack, each of which will give you the same amount of life.

If you cast a spell, allow Aetherflux Reservoir's ability to resolve, and cast another spell, the new instance of Aetherflux Reservoir's ability will give you 1 more life than the last ability.

Also, unless some of the Aetherflux Reservoirs weren't on the battlefield in the beginning, the minimum life gain your opponent should have gained is 30.

First spell: Three triggers, each for 1 life. 3 life this wave. 3 life total.
Second spell: Three triggers, each for 2 life. 6 life this wave. 9 life total.
Third spell: Three triggers, each for 3 life. 9 life this wave. 18 life total.
Fourth spell: Three triggers, each for 4 life. 12 life this wave. 30 life total.

That minimum changes if one or more of the spells were Aetherflux Reservoirs, meaning the process began with fewer than three Aetherflux Reservoirs out.

I think he had 2 then casted the third as one of the 4 spells.

If the third Reservoir is the third spell cast it would be

2 triggers for 1 each - 2 gained, 2 total

2 triggers for 2 each - 4 gained, 6 total

2 triggers for 3 each - 6 gained, 12 total

3 triggers for 4 each - 12 gained, 24 total
