Im not quite sure how to put this so sorry if i ramble or if im vague. But do all the different formats hurt each other i know in every set they print they print cards that are only useful for limited which hurts standard because you might get stuck playing sub bad cards if you dont pull the cards you need from packs or a card you where using rotated out of standard.

Do you think wizards ever had an idea for a card standard but didnt print it because itd be to powerful in modern because of a certain combo with it even though it wouldnt have been a problem in standard. Perhpas wizards is staying away from 4 and 5 color legends because they dont want those cards to be in commander.

I know my train of thought is hard to follow but i want to hear your opinions

I'm fairly certain (though I don't have the source) that they have stated that they don't avoid making powerful cards that'd be too good in modern for standard. If you need an example, you can look at Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time. Those two basically got banned in everything except standard, so though it may be coincidence, to me it seems like they're willing to make powerful cards even if it'd warp other formats.

As for the commander comment, First, I don't think they care what cards can be in commander, seeing as they don't control the format. Second, in general there has always been a lack of 4 color legendaries, so them not printing new 4 or 5 color legendaries isn't really that surprising. Third, they have printed 5 color legendaries, and recently too. Look at Sliver Hivelord and General Tazri. Though Tazri is mono white, she is a card that you can have as commander for a 5 color edh deck.

iirc they only plan & test for limited. then they emergency-ban broken stuff (like TC ~1 year ago) in eternal formats. i think standard only saw a emergency ban once but i dont play standard so dont quote me on that ;) im pretty sure they do not look into legacy for example when designing cards (looking at u True-Name Nemesis...)

and yes they started looking at EDH because it sells. but they dont care if something is really strong in EDH or not because the RC is not part of wizards

ok thanks for the insight. i didnt know you could use tazri as a 5 color commander. i thought wizards came out and said treasure cruse and dig through time where mistakes. But if there is an article where wizards says they dont avoid printing cards that puts my worries to rest.

I dont think they care too much about printing strong cards in legacy as the format already has some cards that are just stupidly powerful. But whats the rc?

legacy was just an example. stoneforge mystic in modern then ;)

rc is the rules committee

they print mystic, 1 year later batterskull and then 1 month later introduce the format. and it turns out its too much to handle. pretty obvious they dont really stay away from cards just because they are too good in eternal formats

Wizards designs for limited and standard, not for other formats. Rightly or wrongly is another question, but perhaps not one for this thread.
