Guessing best time to buy would be just before rotation?

They'll be shocked.

There are about 30 threads on this already.

I highly doubt they'll dip.

First, the Magic community has gotten significantly wiser about economics. When Innistrad was poised to rotate out, the community at large was aware that cards like Snapcaster Mage and Liliana of the Veil had long-term value and would be worth holding onto or investing in. People know that the shocks have long-term value and are staples in Modern and eternal formats.

Second, lots of players are looking to get into Modern. RTR presents a fantastic opportunity to do just that because of the shocks. Those who don't need the shocks for themselves know they can invest in them and pass them on later at no loss and probably at a profit. Demand for the shocks should remain close to where it is now.

The shocks are also currently between $7-12, which is not an unreasonable price. It's the lowest they've been in a while, and they don't reasonably deserve to be much lower than that. If the shocks dip, it will be by an insignificant amount.

I think the shocklands will rotate with no opinion at all. They are fictitious places printed on cardboard.

On a serious note...they will only go up after the inferred initial dip. They are already out of print I think and they see play in eternal formats as staples.

Either buy now while prices are decent or wait and hope they fall a buck or two.

Cards always take a dip at rotation but because they are shocklands they will probably drop 2 dollars and then go up after that.

We may see the $12 ones take a slight hit, but I doubt the $8 ones are going to move.

i think it will be just like last time. They dip slightly and then go up to $20, until reprint which is never going to happen b/c WOTC stated ravnica shall not be returned to

Blue stay about where they are maybe a little dip, non blue dip to below blue prices.

August 27, 2014 5:25 p.m.

@Asher18: I don't think it's a good idea to automatically assume the shocks will never see a reprint. First, they have relatively generic names. They aren't tied specifically to Ravnica. Second, there's plenty of chance for them to be included in a Modern Masters-style release in the future.

In like, the next 10 years, no, Ravnica won't be reprinted a 3rd time. However, we can't count out a shockland reprint for the third time after that.

And I totally agree with Epoch, people aren't stupid and realise that these things will cost more later down the road, regardless of if they "only play standard". If they're playing in a few years, regardles of format, it's a good idea to hold onto them.

Alright, another quick question that is somewhat related to the one i asked in the original topic, and i'm guessing the older Godless Shrine shouldn't change much? I've found i like the art for the older ones more.

They should follow a similar trend to the new ones, if not spike at a greater rate. While fewer people want the old art, there's also less copies and the people that do want it really want it. If you want the older art, the time to buy (whenever you pick) should be about the same as you would for the new ones.

Look at it from a risk/return perspective. They could drop, one would assume by $1$3, at most. However, everyone is in agreement that they will indeed go up post rotation, considerably more than $1-$3. That being said, is it worth speculating over a few dollars across the board or just getting them now at roughly all time lows. That is what you have to ask yourself if you're on the fence about this.

Rotation of cards is nothing new and is a well known factor. You could even consider that this is already factored into the price of the cards.

The problem is that we aren't actually sure how high shocks might rise. I don't think they're going to rocket up to $20, as some people seem to suspect. It takes a while for cards to gain in value, and there are a LOT of RTR/GTC shocks in circulation.
