Question about the Phasing ability

Hey guys,

I saw a lot of interesting old school cards, which have the phasing ability. Now I think about to create a phasing deck, but before I do this I wanted to know If it make sense today, to build such a deck? An another - more general - question is, what the pro's and con's of phasing cards are?

Thank you very much!

Like, there are no card that directly interacts with phasing. Nothing like Astral Slide in terms of value. All you do is play a deck with lots of memory issues. Their pro is they are sometimes cheaper. Their con is they don't exist half the time.

My friend runs a deck with Taniwha as his commander for EDH, and it's absolutely hilarious to play against. It's totally viable to make a phasing deck(at least in Commander).

The pros of phasing are that your lands are very hard to destroy, since they're not there half the time, but that's also one of its greatest flaws, because you can't play things every other turn, so phasing decks need tons of mana rocks. Another pro is that you can run tons of boardwipes and stuff like land return spells without hurting your own lands and creatures. Hope this helped! Have fun!

A specific example of phasing being a massive advantage is the aura: Vanishing on a voltron commander.... or with Zur the enchanter to search it up. The creature phases out with all auras in place AND phases back in with all auras, equipment, counters intact REALLY DIFFICULT to remove that

Phasing also gives you a very effective (albeit difficult) way of dealing with troublesome Commanders. You can enchant the opponent's Commander to grant it phasing with something like Cloak of Invisibility, wait for the creature to phase out, and then cast Sands of Time to cause everyone to skip their untap steps. The phased out Commander won't ever phase back in on its own, and because phasing isn't a zone change, the "tuck rule" doesn't apply.

I've seen another (even more convoluted) method that involves changing the Commander into equipment that is then equipped to a token that is subsequently given phasing, which causes it to vanish permanently, as well.

wow guys thank you very much for helping me out with this question! Now I have interesting thoughts about the phasing ability! I think it is a good way to create a balance with creatures which have phasing and creatures that don't have this ability because since you phase in, you also need blockers to compensate this. Like LeaPlath mentioned, it makes no sense if your creatures don't exist half the time while you get tons of damage.

Another point is, when I get it right, you can use the phasing ability on your opponents creatures which is also very interesting. But you guys mostly talk about the EDH format. So do you think it is also useful for another formats?

Thanks a lot!!
