Can i be competative in std with Dimir control but no ugin?

Deck Help forum

Title says it all. The deck I want to build is standard Dimir control. Except I'm short 1 Ashiok and an Ugin. I am hoping to be competitive still. My local standard scene is super competitive mainly because they do win-a-box on wends. Any thoughts or suggestions would be great. Last time I was there I faced a range of decks from mono-red rabblemaster to abzan tempo to whip decks.

Currently I am running Dimir Control with only 1 ashiok and no ugin mainly because I haven't been able to acquire them yet.

Personally, I feel that while Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is a solid addition, it isn't a necessary one. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, on the other hand is more integral to the strategy. 2 of is the bare minimum, 3 being a better bet.

Ok. I had 2 at one point but ended up trading one away. Was a sad day. I will definitely work on getting a 2nd one back. I feel like Dimir stands a good chance against most competitive decks this block. At least I have answers for most threats and enough removal should anything hit the board i can usually deal with it in a turn or 2. Unfortunately last time I got paired against a bamf rabblemaster deck and got stomped in round 1. Made significant changes since then so Hopefully this time will be better.

Silumgar, the Drifting Death is actually really good, just toss two of those in there.

Secondly, Ashiok isn't mandatory at all. Some people use Pearl-Lake Ancient. I personally think a mix of all of them is probably correct.

I like silgumar, but I figured he'd be more of a sideboard against token decks then a main board win con. I just hate tapping out to drop him. I do like PLA a lot. He has been phenomenal in this deck for me.

Eh, think of Silumgar like elspeth. You don't play elspeth on turn six. You play elspeth on turn nine or eleven when you've hit all your land drops and have counter backup.

He's slow but he's fantastic.

Wanna really mess with their flow? I use two Scuttling Doom Engine in my Jeskai control deck when I have a boardwipe in hand, swing with them a few times, and then use End Hostilities to kill everything all and do another 12 damage, lock up the game neat and tidy.

I might actually try that out, the Doom Engine also looks like a nice and neat way to deal with Rhino's.

Yea I've been playing Silumgar in my Sultai control, he's really solid in that kind of shell

Doom engine looks like fun. i do like silumgar especially the hexproof that he brings to the table. Maybe I'll try and mainboard him. Would 1 ashiok, 1 silumgar and 2 PLA be overkill? I'm a tad worried about drawing into too many on my opening hand and having to mulligan or not having an answer for early threats. I know it's only 4 cards out of 60 but i used to run 1 PLA and 1 keranos when i was running U/B/R control.
