Would You Like to See Another Commander's Arsenal?

Commander (EDH) forum

EDH is now a very popular format, and WoTC now releases a Commander set annually (I still refer to the format as "EDH," because I was introduced to it by that name), but I feel that it is practically inevitable that there shall be "commander fatigue," the players growing tired of there being a new product every year, so I would like to see WotC do something different on occasion.

I personally though that Commander's Arsenal was a very interesting idea, with how it did not have complete decks, but instead contained cards that were very useful in EDH format, plus other items, such as sleeves and a life counter, and I would very much like to see a second Commander's Arsenal, to have some greater variety in the products that WotC offers for this format.

What does everyone else say about this? Would you like to see another Commander's Arsenal?

Yes! Reprints of commander staples are always welcome!

I would like to see another, but with a twist: all new cards.

Here’s my thinking. They could design interesting new commanders without having to build a whole deck for them. They could design really specific cards without having to shoehorn them into a deck. They could make cards to help out colors or strategies that need it(thinking Boros lol). Basically this would allow them to have unlimited creative freedom, and let them push some needed cards into the format.

I am thinking that we will see a commander masters. A whole set of the top used edh staples with reprints of 60 70 and 80 dollar cards. With a new 10 legendary cmdrs in it and 10 new cards made for Cmdr

And I'm not talking about battle bonds.

I don't know. I doubt they'd realistically do more then one exclusively commander product a year (Battlebond had much more mainstream appeal. Whereas the EDH decks are almost exclusively for the EDH crowd) so this would probably mean we get Commander arsenal instead of precon decks.

So instead of a bunch of new cards and ideas for our format to really shake it up, we get a bunch of reprints. Which is cool, but if Commander 18 shows anything, the reprints are less valuable to most players, (Still valuable) than the new commanders and staples. They're more exciting frankly. The reason you can release a set like Modern Masters is because Spikey players want to be able to have the best deck at their fingertips and that's very difficult when cards are 100$. And even then, Masters sets also serve dual function as draft environments for the people who could care less about price. You can't just sell something with value. (Not that value isn't important, I hope the C18 backlash gets us some better cards next year but we'll see)

I'm more onboard with an Arsenal of new cards. But I think you're missing a huge advantage of the precon decks. A new player, a disenfranchised player looking for a new format, a returning player, even someone just interested in mixing up the status quo, can buy a precon and play a game of magic using nothing else, the moment they buy it. If I buy this Commander Arsenal 2, I have to buy the product, then buy other cards and construct other decks, it's way more effort. Whereas I can buy a precon deck and instantly play a game of magic, no muss, no fuss, it's magic, for 40$. It's part of the reason I like intro packs and Planeswalker decks for beginners.

The precons tow this wonderful line where they are great places for reprints and new cool strategies and also great for new players looking to get into commander. So why fix what isn't broken?

I would really like for yearly commander sets, commander's arsenal, and core sets to he released alongside each other. The commander set itself to contain the meat and potatos, the yearly core set to contain some additional commander goodies and reprints (amongst our regularly scheduled standard cards of course), and commander's arsenal to contain some premium/high end staples for dedicated/hardcore players to chase after. While the core set and arsenal cards fit along whatever the theme of that year's commander set is.

Wait, fatigue over precons? Nonsense! They're rightly insanely popular. I do think there's need for reprint sets, but I don't think commander masters or arsenal would be a good way to go about it.

I'd be down with only reprints in a commander's arsenal replacing commander pre-cons for a year.

Reprint arsenals should supplement pre-cons, not replace them. Perhaps they could do arsenals every year and not do as many reprints in pre-cons, creating space for cool new cards.
