Dilemma- Oliva or Jund?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have been at odds with my Olivia Voldaran EDH deck in regards to how to manage its weaknesses without sacrificing its strengths.

I have thought of making the commander a utility beast like Xira Arien instead and adding green to the mix with a less tribal vampire theme. I don't have anyone to get opinions from but it eats at me and my OCD wont let me stop thinking about it.

I think that any move away from tribal is a good move. Jund is a very powerful colour wedge and can provide you with some high value cards. It also depends on what you want your win condition for the deck to be.

I want it to be a sleeper deck, unassuming commander, powerful creatures, lots of draw and destruction.

Sleeper decks usually follow more of a combo route. Unfortunately playing powerful creatures will paint a target on your head pretty quickly.

I mean, you could always do the whole Buried Alive fetching Avenger of Zendikar, Craterhoof Behemoth and Madrush Cyclops (or similar haste enabler) into a Living Death. Ends games pretty quickly.

I really think you should keep Oliva as your commander. You said it best yourself, you want an unassuming commander. Unless you're into competitive commander, playing cards you like and having fun are the most important things. Vampire tribal can definitely be rewarding. If you focus on fun and flavorful cards you can always enjoy playing your deck!

Having been a Xira Arien player for about four years now, I can't recommmend her enough. I've run everything from reanimator to combo/control to goodstuff, and she's never once been considered for replacement as general.
