Commander Deck Help forum

Posted on May 13, 2016, 2:27 a.m. by Alexhart

I'm new to MTG sorta. Played a little like 2 years ago. I really like the black cards and in particular my favorite cards is vampire nighthawk so can some one help me with building a deck that's pretty good including va,pore nighthawk?

Which format would you be interested in?

If you like cards like Vampire Nighthawk then you may want to look to Commander (EDH) as a format to take full potential of both format crushing black cards and a vampire tribal theme. It can only get as expensive as your budget, and each deck is as formidable as the player.

The only downside is the 100 card singleton limit, however you get all of the staples youd like, and it makes games more interesting, just depending on what you grab out of your deck.

There are a few Mono-Black vampire commanders floating around, and each tend to have their own archetype within the tribal theme (Control, tempo, combo and Aggro for example). If your looking for fun, interactive games with multiple opponents then this is the format for you.

If not then there's always modern or legacy, but you will find a certain bar that requires you to rise above in order to compete with other archetypes. Not saying 'hawk is a bad card, its just outmatched by other creatures and spells, even though a 2/3 flyer with death touch and life link is hard to beat in a vacuum.

Other then that, it's up to you.

ZeGinger This is in the EDH deck help forum. I would assume that he had already decided on EDH and wanted help with the deck.

You need to decide on what colors to do do tribal vampires in if that is what you want.

I feel grixis would be the strongest colors. Garza Zol, Plague Queen would be the commander. Although I feel she is a bit high costed, the colors are the strongest.

Olivia Voldaren or Olivia, Mobilized for War could put you in Rakdos vampires and I feel could both be good commanders.

In mono black you have both Kalitas and both Drana that would be good choices.

@Gidgetimer well of course it's the Edh forum and that he made a post on it, possibly because he's interested in the format. Regardless it's always nice to give a newer player more reason to play in a specific format, while knowing Its very possible to play in others, yes?

I just think it is advisable to assume that people want to play the format they post on the board in and give them help. Not spend three paragraphs telling them about the format without offering anything helpful at all and then a fourth saying "other formats are available".

So actually no, I don't think it is nice to give a newer player reasons to play in a format and tell them that it is possible to play in others. I think it is condescending thinking that they don't know what they want to do. I also think it is unnecessary unless they ask for help picking a format. Apparently we just have two very different approaches to helping people. I'm not saying you are wrong necessarily as long as you realized that this was the EDH Help boards. I am just answering your question, and no I don't agree.

@Gidgetimer if you have an issue with what I have to offer to the original poster then I suggest you pm me instead of hijacking the thread with a rant about whether or not I should give my two cents about a specific format when the poster may or may not be interested in it in the first place. It's just rude.

Funny thing, I didn't hijack the thread. I mentioned that this was the EDH help forum. You said you realized that and then asked me a question. "Regardless it's always nice to give a newer player more reason to play in a specific format, while knowing Its very possible to play in others, yes?" I then answered that question. Yet somehow I was the one who was going off topic.

If phrasing something as a question that isn't is a communication idiosyncrasy you have I apologize. Otherwise if you don't want an answer don't ask a question. I didn't rant, and already said "I'm not saying you are wrong necessarily as long as you realized that this was the EDH Help boards. I am just answering your question". I would thank you to not get so defensive and take affront where none was intended.

A great way to get some ideas of what deck you might want to build is go to the "Deck Builder" and choose "advanced search." Put "Commander/EDH" in the format field, "Vampire Nighthawk" in the cards field, and probably "Budget" in the hubs field. You can also choose "Score Descending" in the sort field if you want to see which decks are most popular. This will tell you what kind of decks other people are playing the card in, what's possible, and might pique your interest in a particular commander or type of deck. Good luck!

There is also EDHrec.com you can enter a card and it will show analytics on that card, like what decks it appears in most. Any of the commanders that show up are decent ideas, so just find a commander you like. I ran Vampire Nighthawk and it looks like it shows up most often in tribal vampires and Orzhov value decks.

Baron Sengir is the highest percentage at 100% but I don't like him as a commander. All of the commanders I mentioned earlier are on there, and I still think that any of them would be a good choice for a deck and that Vampire Nighthawk would fit well into them. Of the Orzhov value commanders I like Karlov of the Ghost Council the best.

Once you decide on a direction to take the deck let us know and we'll be happy to help.
