Choices Explained —April 16, 2020

This is a deck my mtg buddy Kiran_M created that we have discussed heavily. In short, the goal of the deck is use Boros Reckoner + Jaya, Venerated Firemage + a way to make Reckoner indestructible to deal infinite damage. I thought the concept was super neat so I built my own version of the deck to see if could make it competitive. This is my synopsis.

Trying to make the deck work as originally conceived was a real pain. The biggest problem is Jaya. She’s so weak, by herself, and overpriced that I never wanted to see her until I had the other 2 combo pieces. I tried using Wishclaw Talisman to make the combo easier to assemble but a lot of the times they would just sit there because I was afraid of giving it to them without a way to kill them. The other tutors were too slow in my opinion. I dropped the tutor plan and decided to go for a more midrange style deck with a combo kill option. I wanted all the cards to be powerful on their own to make hand disruption and and cards like Slaughter Games less effective. I tried to keep Jaya in but she had to go. I replaced her with Obosh, the Preypiercer. This does what Jaya does but way better and is a legitimate threat on his own. It can’t start the infinite chain on his own but it can set up some nasty board states. With the help of Sorin, Grim Nemesis or Bonecrusher Giant I can complete the chain but that makes it a 4 card combo that will rarely happen. However, because the pieces are strong on their own it doesn’t really matter. I’m super excited for Ikoria to drop so I can play this online. I hope you found this helpful. I’ll continue to make adjustments over time.
