Zur the Enchanter + Enchantress's Presence = Card Draw?

Asked by Dreno33 12 years ago

Would Zur the Enchanter + Enchantress's Presence (already on the field) = Card Draw every time it attacks?

From what i recall, "play" mean " put onto the battlefield from anywhere", so yes you would draw a card.

Nope. The gatherer entry for Enchantress's Presence says "cast" not "play. Since Zur puts it into play but doesn't cast it won't work the way you want.

Whooo, my bad. I should have double checked the gatterrer for erata before reply. Kirtanian is right then.

Older text templates used the word "play" for multiple unrelated things, and it often caused confusion about how certain cards worked together (like in this question you're asking). To fix this, the Magic 2010 Rules Update changed the name of the "in play" zone to "the battlefield", started using "cast" instead of "play" for spells, and now only uses "play" when an effect can be used to play lands. Zur the Enchanter puts enchantments directly onto the battlefield, but Enchantress's Presence only triggers when you cast an enchantment spell.

Though wouldn't the cards wording override gather?

No. The errata on Gatherer (also refered to as "Oracle text") always have priority over what's printed on the card itself.

That's the whole point of having the Oracle text in Gatherer. Over time, the text on a card might need to be edited to account for rules/templating changes (examples: this rules question and hundreds of other cards) or straight-out typos/mistakes in the original printing (examples: Walking Atlas was missing the Artifact type, Lifeline had completely broken text that never worked correctly). The Oracle text in Gatherer is the official text of the card.

For me that was half the fun, debating the text of the card, learning new points of view on the same wording. I can understand why the change and want to make it simpler and more fun for the majority, but the debater in me detests this and wishes the cards text was the final say. ... But thanks guys for clearing that up.

I agree that some of the debate is fun in a casual setting. It just won't do in a competitive environment though. Everyone needs to know precisely what cards do, especially when prizes are on the line.
