Yahenni's Expertise -3/-3 "until end of turn"

Asked by Argy 6 years ago

I cast Yahenni's Expertise, killing a Hostage Taker.

In response my Opponent targets the Hostage Taker with Supernatural Stamina, returning it to the field.

Does the Hostage Taker survive, or does it still die to Yahenni's Expertise, because the effect is until end of turn?

It survives.

You determine the set of objects to which a continuous effect (eg "until end of turn") is applied when the spell/ability creating that effect resolves. This set doesn't change afterwards. The returned Hostage Taker is a new object that's not part of this set, so the effect isn't applied to it.

611.2c If a continuous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability modifies the characteristics or changes the controller of any objects, the set of objects it affects is determined when that continuous effect begins. After that point, the set won't change. [...]

Example: An effect that reads "All white creatures get +1/+1 until end of turn" gives the bonus to all permanents that are white creatures when the spell or ability resolves even if they change color later and doesnt affect those that enter the battlefield or turn white afterward.
