will thorn of amethyst increase the cost of an artifact/creature card?
Asked by nickiru 10 years ago
Thorn of Amethyst affects non creatures. Ornithopter , for example, is a artifact/creature. One of it's properties is a non creature, so would the cost of casting it still be increased due to amethyst?
Second question: For a lack of a better example, if there is an artifact/enchantment card or something with two non creature properties, would it's cost be increased by 2? 1 for each non creature property from Thorn of Amethyst ?

Case 1
The distinction you're making is illegitimate. Magic doesn't consider properties like "creature" or "noncreature" on a multi-part-per-card level. If the card is a creature card, Thorn of Amethyst 's ability won't affect it. If the card is a noncreature card, Thorn of Amethyst 's ability will affect it. Because Ornithopter is a creature card (it has the type "Creature"), it won't be affected by Thorn of Amethyst 's ability.
Case 2
Again, Thorn of Amethyst doesn't inspect cards on that level. Thorn of Amethyst 's ability asks one question: "Is this a noncreature spell?" If the answer is yes, the spell's cost is increased. If the answer is no, the spell's cost is unaffected.

@GoldGhost012: There's no such thing as "partially a creature" in Magic. Either an object is a creature or it is not a creature.

I agree with Epochalyptik.
This explains other card interactions as well; like Primal Command being negated for targeting a land that got animated to a creature. The ability is negated because all it checks is whether it is a non-creature. It doesn't still work because the land is still a land. Simply because it is a creature, it doesn't work. Similarly, Thorn of Amethyst checks only if the card is a non-creature. Doesn't matter what other types it has: it's like a yes or no question. Is it, or is it not a creature?

No. Since Ornithopter is at least partially a creature, it won't be affected by Thorn of Amethyst .
No. Thorn of Amethyst just checks to see whether or not the spell being cast is a creature, then applies its effect. An enchantment artifact like Bow of Nylea will still only cost 1 more.
