Will Artificial Evolution's Effect Be Copied?
Asked by Quickspell 3 years ago
If I use Artificial Evolution to change the creature type of, say, Birds of Paradise to "Dinosaur" and then cast Clone to copy it, will the clone enter as a "Dinosaur"?

One small correction to the above: Artificial Evolution's effect is a type-changing effect, applied in Layer 4. This doesn't change the answer to the question but can be important for interactions with other effects.

@Rhadamanthus Artificial Evolution changes the creatures type specifically by changes the text (and changes all instances, not just the type line), so it's a text changing effect like Magical Hack. This does mean it gets applied in layer 3 before other type changing effects, regardless of time stamps and dependancies.

Sorry, I was operating on a half-remembered impression of the card and didn't actually read the Oracle text. My mistake.

From rule 707.2 Other effects (including type-changing and text-changing effects), status, and counters are not copied.

No. A creatures copiable characteristics are defined by what's written in the card as well as other layer 1 effects (basically other copy abilities that alter the creature, like Phantasmal Image). Artificial Evolution is a text changing ability so it's applied in layer 3.
