Who gets what with proteus staff?

Asked by lordofsand 12 years ago

Im playing a game where my opponent has Proteus Staff and takes control of one of my creatures, then uses the staff on said creature. Since the creature goes back to my deck, do i get the flood or not?

He gets the flood. When the creature is tucked, it checks the owner of the card. When the "flood" happens, it checks the controller of the creature for the time at which the ability resolved.

So if, for instance, you were to take control of the creature at instant speed via Beguiler of Wills or some such, Proteus Staff would still tuck him into your library, but you'd get the Polymorph effect.

Wait, the wording is weird, since I had a similar question.

I take a foes creature

I activate Proteus Staff I tuck their creature into my library? Or does it get tucked into their library? Then, do they get to bounce out a creature, or do I bounce out a creature from library? Is this what flood means?

So in otherwords, aside from getting rid of a threat, the staff isn't polymorph on a stick unless you use your own creature?

You can never put a card or token another player owns into your hand, library, or exile. Proteus Staff also makes the distinction that the creature is put onto the bottom of its owner's library, and the controller is the player who reveals cards.

I have never heard flood used in this context before.

Me neither, it makes sense though. It can get as nasty as one, too. I have a friend that plays a Vendilion Clique edh deck, and it's completely creatureless except Emrakul, the Aeons Torn . Proteus Staff happens, as well as Polymorph . It's french edh, by the way. So when your general gets tucked, you can choose to put him back in the general zone. Also, Emrakul is legal. :P
