what happens with trample lifelink

So I have a Fleecemane Lion on the field and its monstrous. I enchant it with Unflinching Courage and attack. My opponent blocks with a Gray Merchant of Asphodel . He says I only gain 2 life because the trample makes it do that. Would I gain the full 6 as it did 4 damage to the merchant and 2 to him?
You get to deal a total of 6 damage with your lion. The way trample works - you deal x amount to blockers of the creature with trample and after you have assigned lethal damage to them, you can do assign anything leftover to the player.
In the case of Gary, you deal 4 damage to Gary and 2 damage to the player, and gain a total of 6 life (barring no protection from white is present on the blocker).

Your opponent is wrong. Lifelink gains the controlling player life equal to the amount of damage the creature deals. The creature is dealing 6 damage, the fact that it's 4 to a creature and 2 to a player isn't important.
