What happens when Aeve, Progenitor Ooze is countered?
Asked by CamraMaan 2 years ago
Say 10 spells have already been cast this turn before I cast Aeve, Progenitor Ooze, to which my opponent casts a Counterspell as a response. On cast, Aeve's storm trigger goes on the stack... does it resolve and place the 10 copies on the stack before a counterspell can do anything...? I know a spell/effect that counters the storm trigger can work, but other than preventing the original Aeve copy with a normal counterspell, will a counter affect the storm copies from going onto the stack and/or resolving? I'm guessing it will only counter the original card, but the storm copies will all still make it onto the stack and resolve. This became a discussion topic at the table last night. Thanks in advance! :)

Depending on When exactly the Counterspell was cast the copies may be made before or after the Counterspell resolves, but the copies will be created and will resolve unless they themselves are countered no matter what.
It sounds like your opponent is immediately casting Counterspell without waiting for the trigger to resolve so the original will be countered before the copies are created, but that doesn't actually matter. Storm copies of spells are made regardless of if the spell is still on the stack. If the copy effect was targeted, a countered spell would no longer be a valid target. But untargeted copying of spells don't need the spell to still be on the stack to copy it.

Or does the Counterspell remove the original Aeve card from the stack, so the storm trigger has no reference of what to make copies of...?
