What happens to an artifact attached to a god if it is mind controlled and loses creature status

Asked by exodius 6 years ago

I was playing BW lifegain and had Athreos, God of Passage on the field with a devotion of 9. My opponent had Stuffy Doll on the field. I played Godsend and attached it to Athreos. To stop me from attacking next turn and exiling Stuffy Doll my opponent played Mind Control. My opponent did not have any devotion to white or black so Athreos so it loses creature status. At the time I thought that would make the enchantment and artifact no longer valid and birth would be destroyed. I now believe the enchantment would be destroyed but the artifact would simply become upequipped but I'm not sure. Any clarification would be appreciated.

You are correct, except for the term destroy. The Aura is put into the graveyard as a state based action, causing you to regain control of Athreos, God of Passage. Had it been able to enchant Athreos regardless of devotion, such as Steal Enchantment it would be able to remain. Godsend becomes unattached, also as a state based action, but you still control it and would be able to re-equip it on your next turn.

303.4c: If an Aura is enchanting an illegal object or player as defined by its enchant ability and other applicable effects, the object it was attached to no longer exists, or the player it was attached to has left the game, the Aura is put into its owner's graveyard. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)

212.2i ....An Equipment that equips an illegal or nonexistent permanent stops equipping that permanent, but remains in play. (This is a state-based effect. See rule 420.)
