What happens once Charge Counters are used?

Asked by PJ_nx01 9 years ago

Specifically, if you choose to activate Eternity Vessel's Landfall ability, and switch life totals, what happens to the Vessel's charge counter and more importantly, what happens to the card iself? Does it go into the GY once you activate the Landfall ability or does it stay in play with a new life total from when you switched??

Nothing happens to the charge counters because it doesn't say anything happens to them.

Nor does it go to the graveyard. It stays on the battlefield to trigger again.

As long as it's in play, its landfall trigger will happen whenever you put a land into play.

Cards do only what they say they do. Charge counters do not have separate rules that cause them to be treated differently from other counters.

Also note that you don't switch life totals here, your life total becomes equal to the number of charge counters on Eternity Vessel. So if Vessel entered with 20 counters it will always put your life to 20 on the trigger.

This is different to Tree of Redemption where you DO switch the values.

Also of note is that when you set your life total to a value, you actually gain or lose the required amount of life to reach that value, which can matter for cards like Sanguine Bond

Ah, I see. I think....So I put down Eternity Vessel as I have 20 life at that moment. Throughout the game I drop down to 3 life. I then set my life to the charged 20 when a land enters. Is there any number of how many times this can be done?

As many times as you have lands that enter the battlefield. If you cast Boundless Realms with 10 lands out already, the ability will trigger 10 times. They will all resolve, but it will be otherwise redundant after the first resolution.
