Using abilities that say "can only be used any time you can cast a sorcery"

Asked by JasonMB 9 years ago

If you have effects in play that make it so you can cast sorcerys at anytime, does this allow you then to use abilities (such as Whip of Erebos ) at anytime since it says "anytime you can cast a sorcery" ?

I am sort of conflicted on that, because my instinct says, no of course not. But if they intended it to only be during your main phases, why not say that? So, maybe if you activate Alchemist's Refuge or something other effect that now allows you to cast sorcerys on your opponent's turn, then maybe you can activate whip on your opponent's turn?

Your instinct is right. Whenever you can cast a sorcery means "during your main phase, on an empty stack, when you have priority."

Only on your main phase would allow for abilities such as that on Whip of Erebos or Birthing Pod to be activated in response to things...

Your instinct is right. "Any time you could cast a sorcery" is short for "when you have priority during a main phase on your turn when the stack is empty". Any effects that restrict you from casting certain spells or let you cast certain spells at an unusual time don't change the definition.
