Type-changing cards trigger order
Asked by Kylobek 9 years ago
So I'm building a Rakdos the Defiler deck, and ran into a little question while building it.
Let's say I have Conspiracy out, set to Demon, and then attach Nim Deathmantle to one of the creature, what type is it and why?
Also what happens to that creature if I equip it to another creature?

Your question deals with everyone's favorite part of the rules: 613. Interaction of continuous effects. We get to talk about layers and timestamps. Luckily we care only about the type changing portion of the effects so they all apply in the same layer. This means that the effect with the most recent time stamp will determine the creature's type.
613.6d An Aura, Equipment, or Fortification receives a new timestamp at the time it becomes attached to an object or player
This means that if Conspiracy is on the battlefield and you attach the Nim Deathmantle to a creature it is a zombie. If Nim Deathmantle is attached to a creature and Conspiracy enters the battlefield the equipped creature is the named type.
When Nim Deathmantle is unattached from a creature with Conspiracy on the field then the creature is the chosen type since Nim Deathmantle no longer applies to that creature.

Note that nothing is triggering in this case. These are static abilities, not triggered abilities.

I believe you would go in order of of which effect changes the type of the creature last, so First Conspiracy would alter the creature to be a Demon, but then the creature dies and you return it to play with Nim Deathmantles ability. It would just be a fact while the creature is in play that it is a Demon, but when Nim Deathmantle is attached to the creature it would be overwritten to be a black zombie and nothing else.
One of Nim Deathmantles Card Rulings:
1/1/2011 Nim Deathmantle's color-changing and type-changing effects override the equipped creature's previous colors and creature types. After Nim Deathmantle becomes equipped to a creature, that creature will be a black Zombie, not any other colors or creature types.
