Trinisphere and Hideaway lands interaction
Asked by SurpriZe 7 years ago
If there's a Trinisphere on the battlefield, and a player activates, say, Mosswort Bridge's last ability while meeting all the requirements, will that player have to pay the trinisphere "tax" (thus, paying 3) or are they actually allowed to play the spell for free?
To add a slight clarification, If you used a card like Aether Vial to put a spell into play, that would not cost 3 mana, as you are not casting the creature spell.

Thank you for the quick reply, cdkime. I'm aware of the gatherer ruling, but I wasn't sure if it applied in the case of this ability, but thanks for the clarification!

To be extra clear: a card's "mana cost" is specifically the symbols printed in the upper right corner. When an effect lets you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost", that's the only part of the cost you're getting for free. Any mandatory additional costs or other relevant cost increasers/decreasers/Trinisphere will apply, and you're allowed to add on optional additional costs (kicker, etc.) as long as you pay for them.

The spell would cost three mana to cast:
Ruling, 12/1/2004: Trinispheres ability affects the total cost of the spell. It is applied after any other cost increasers or cost reducers are applied: First apply any cost increases. Next apply any cost reducers. Finally look at the amount of mana you have to pay. If its less than three mana, youll pay three mana.
