Triggers at beginning of upkeep?

Asked by MagnusMTG 11 years ago

Let's say, during the end step of my opponent's turn, I sac Abhorrent Overlord to pay for Rescue from the Underworld targeting a Gray Merchant of Asphodel that's in my graveyard.

Rescue says that I return the Overlord to the field at the beginning of my next upkeep.

My thinking is that, since it is no longer the beginning of my upkeep after Overlord and Gray Merchant return, Abhorrent Overlord's second ability won't trigger and I won't have to sacrifice anything until next turn.

Is this correct or is there another 'beginning of upkeep' after that happens?

You're correct. At the beginning of the upkeep step, anything that triggers at that time is put onto the stack. Once it resolves, nothing else that enters the battlefield later with 'beginning of upkeep' abilities will trigger.

When you return Overlord and Gary when the upkeep trigger resolves, you will not also sacrifice a creature to the Overlord's ability.

No. Rescue from the Underworld 's effect happens at the beginning of your upkeep. After its ability has triggered, it isn't the beginning of the upkeep anymore, so Abhorrent Overlord 's ability doesn't trigger.

I don't know why I said no. You are correct.

You are absolutely right: it is no longer the beginning of upkeep when Rescue's effect resolves so the sacrifice trigger doesn't happen. There is no second round of beginning of upkeep triggers unless something like Paradox Haze is involved.

Thanks, all. I'm glad I was able to trust the logical sense of the wording.

I actually did that exact play at the last FNM, but it wasn't enough to save me - got stomped by Grixis Control. I just wanted to make sure it was done correctly.
