Triggered abilities with "when you cast this spell" - order in the stack and their resolution

Asked by Mythwind 6 years ago

How would abilities from Edgar Markov and Maelstrom Nexus interact and trigger in the stack?

Playing Edgar Markov as commander, if I have Maelstrom Nexus in the battlefield and cast a Vampiric Dragon as my 1st spell, assuming I will cascade into Soul Collector. How do triggers stack? Do I get to choose any orders?

Since both are cast triggers, they'll trigger simultaneously. This lets you order them however you want. I'm confused how you get a Maelstrom Nexus on your side of the field with Edgar Markov as your commander.

Regardless of how you got the Nexus on the battlefield (could have taken control for all I know) Edgar and Cascade both trigger on cast, you put both of them on the stack in whatever order you want. Once Cascade resolves, you'll cast whatever you cascaded into, which will trigger Edgar again if it's a vampire.

Regardless of the order you stack Cascade and Edgar in, the original spell will be the last to resolve, and if you Cascade into a Vampire, Edgar 2 will resolve before said cascaded vampire.

So if Wrath of God was the result of the cascade (instead of Soul Collector), would Vampiric Dragon and the vamprire token be destroyed?

If you cast Vampiric Dragon and it cascades into Wrath of God, then wrath is resolving before the dragon. The dragon isn't even in play yet. Whether or not it destroys the vampire token depends on what order you put things on the stack. If you set it up so the cascade resolves first, then no, otherwise yes. Here's the catch: You have to make that choice before you know what you're cascading into.
