Trample vs. Deathtouch

Asked by IAmKingTony 13 years ago

Alright here's the scenario. I had a Wildblood Pack  Flip and Merciless Predator  Flip swinging after a played AND flashbacked Rally the Peasants . My opponent had 2 zombie tokens and a Typhoid Rats on the field. I have 16 life, he has 6. He wants to know if the Typhoid Rats blocking the Wildblood Pack  Flip will prevent the trample damage and buy him time. I say he's dead but he wants a second opinion.

You can't stop trample damage unless you kill the trampling creature before it can deal its combat damage (i.e. by using a creature with first strike). Combat damage is assigned to the blocking creatures and defending player/planeswalker. Then, all combat damage is dealt at the same time. This means the defending player/planeswalker would take the trample damage at the same time that the trampling creature takes the deathtouch damage.

The only creature ability that stops trample is First Strike and only if that creature deals lethal damage to the trampling creature.

To further what Epochalyptik said, if he had somehow(enchanted or another creature's special ability) had given the Typhoid RatsMTG Card: Typhoid Rats first strike, even though it's 0ne damage that is enough to kill the Wildblood PackMTG Card: Wildblood Pack and his rats would live him taking no damage.
