Trample damage?

Asked by DrkNinja 12 years ago

So a friend and I were playing and I had a Stormtide Leviathan , a Sphinx of the Steel Wind , a Blazing Archon , and a Phyrexian Obliterator coming at him. He had a Deathspore Thallid and 14 saprolings. He attempted to block the Leviathan with 7 saprolings, and the Obliterator with 5 saprolings; then after they were declared blocked he sacrificed them all to put seven -1/-1 counters on both the Archon and the Sphinx.

After that the toughness is 0 that is blocking my Obliterator and my Leviathan correct? Therefore meaning all the trample damage went through correct?

Yep, thats right. The Obliterator's 5 trample damage goes through because the total toughness blocking it has become 0.

Unless your Phyrexian Obliterator was granted Flying or Islandwalk, it shouldn't have even been able to attack due to Stormtide Leviathan . Elsewise, yes, as long as lethal damage is dealt to each blocker of an attacking creature with Trample (in this case, 0 damage to each of the sacrificed saprolings), the remaining damage can be assigned to the player or planeswalker which was attacked.

To the best of my knowledge, the full 5 damage from the Phyrexian Obliterator would go through fine, but any damage from the Stormtide Leviathan would have been prevented due to it having been A) blocked in the combat step and, B) not having trample as an ability. With no toughness to soak up damage from the obliterator it would go through as if it had been unblocked, thanks to its trample ability.

When you say he "sacrificed them all" are you referring to him sac'ing the 12 saprolings you say he used to block, or the full 14 that he had? You certainly can't put seven -1/-1 counters on each of two creatures with only 12 saprolings via Deathspore Thallid (unless he removed additional spore counters to create and sac more saprolings).

Even more perplexing is that you were attacking him with a non-flying, non-islandwalk Phyrexian Obliterator (given that Stormtide Leviathan was in play).

I'm interested to know how you attacked with Phyrexian Obliterator , since it has neither islandwalk nor trample (see Stormtide Leviathan 's last ability.

I also don't know how your opponent blocked the Stormtide Leviathan , since it has islandwalk and makes all lands islands in addition to their other types.

Stormtide Leviathan doesn't have trample, so it won't deal combat damage to the defending player or planeswalker if it has been blocked.

Creatures with trample need to assign lethal damage to all blockers before they can assign damage to the defending player/planeswalker. Since there are no longer any blocking creatures to assign damage to, all trample damage from the Phyrexian Obliterator can be assigned to your opponent.
