Timing Mayhem Devil Damage vs gain Life

Hello all,

first question here, I hope I am doing everything correctly.

We just had a situation where my opponent had 1 life left and could gain life by sacrificing a creature. In this case he had Slimefoot, the Stowaway on the table and wanted to sacrifice a token with Costly Plunder

I had Mayhem Devil on the table.

How is the timing in this specific case? Would he gain a life first and be able to draw cards or would Mayhem Devil deal damage first?

It depends on who's turn it is. When multiple things trigger at the same time they go on the stack in Active Player, Non-Active Player (APNAP) order. So, if it is your opponent's turn their trigger goes on the stack an then yours goes on the stack above it. In this case yours resolves first and they die before they gain life. If it is on your turn they will gain life and then take a damage.
