Thoughtseize + flash hexproof?
Asked by smackjack 11 years ago
If my opponent plays Thoughtseize and i respond by using AEther Vial to flash in Aegis of the Gods , i will have hexproof when Thoughtseize resolves and my opponent has to reveal his hand, right? Does he also have to discard a non land card, or can he "fail" to choose one?

Close, but that's not how it works. If all of a spell's targets are illegal when it would start to resolve then it gets countered by the rules. It isn't forced to change its targets. The play in your example will counter Thoughtseize rather than redirect it, but that's still pretty good.
If you did actually Redirect Thoughtseize, your opponent can't "fail to find" because his hand is specifically being revealed as part of the effect. This means all players are able to verify whether or not there's a legal choice available.

Your opponent doesn't have to reveal their hand. Targets are chosen during the casting process, and they can't change later, unless an effect like Redirect is used. If all targets of a spell become illegal before it resolves (like with hexproof), the spell is countered by rules and will have no effect.
