Tapped during transform.

Asked by DancesWithGoblins 12 years ago

To settle an argument with a friend, if I played Chalice of Life  Flip , next turn tap it and then have 31 life, it transforms. My opinion is that it transforms tapped, and cannot be tapped again until its controllers untap step, he says the transformation untaps it, so the controller could then tap Chalice of Death  Flip . Who is correct?

You would be correct. Transforming does not untap it. That goes for any flip cards. Otherwise the mechanic could be ridiculously broken. This similar argument came up with one of my friends who was borrowing my Vivid Vampires deck. He tapped the Bloodline Keeper  Flip to produce what would be the 5th vampire, then payed the B in order to transform it. He thought it untapped so he could then attack with it as well that turn. This is not the case. If ANY flip cards are tapped when they would be transformed, they remain tapped.

When something transforms, it is still the same permanent. This means that it will remain in whatever state is was in before the transformation (tapped, equipped, enchanted, attacking, blocking, etc.). The only thing that changes is the side of the card that is currently face up.

Transforming a Chalice of Life  Flip will not untap it, simply because it is the same permanent.
